THE GOLDEN TICKET – EUROPEAN PREMIERE

A New Opera Based on Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Music by Peter Ash – Libretto by Donald Strurrock
Commissioned by American Lyric Theater, Lawrence Edelson, Producing Artistic Director; and Felicity Dahl
European Premiere – Wexford Festival Opera – October 17-29, 2010
The Golden Ticket, based on Roald Dahl’s classic book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is a deliciously layered fable with fantasy and comedy about the power of generosity and fearless imagination. The music is beautiful, with sophisticated vocal writing and wonderful scenes you’ll remember from the book: Augustus Gloop being swept away in the Chocolate River, Violet Beauregarde inflating like a giant blueberry, Mike Teavee being demagnified into the tele-dimension, Veruca Salt being thrown down the rubbish shoot by a gang of nut-inspecting squirrels and a magic elevator flying high over the city – and of course, we couldn’t forget the Oompa Loompas!
