American Lyric Theater presents public performances in New York City to promote the work of gifted emerging artists, and to expose the public to the process of developing new operas.


An insider’s look at the workshop process for new operas, featuring concert readings of new works at all stages of their development with singers from the world’s leading opera houses.

Following each concert, ALT’s Founder and Producing Artistic Director, Lawrence Edelson, moderates a discussion with the composer, librettist and audience.


ALT Alumni: Composers and Librettists in Concert

Featuring the work of alumni artists who have dramatically impacted the landscape of contemporary opera, each concert in this series includes excerpts from recently premiered and upcoming works for the stage from around the country by prominent alumni of the Composer Librettist Development Program.

The Living Libretto

A first glimpse at new operas in development at ALT, featuring public readings of new opera libretti (read, not sung) by professional actors, along with an informal wine and cheese reception for attendees to get to know the artists behind each work.
